This pie chart tells us how the UK government spent their money. The total expenditure is £ 315 billion in 1996,divided into ten categories.
The highest amount of money was spent on social security, £ 100 billion. Health and personal social services was £ 53 billion, followed by education with £ 38 billion. Debt interest and defense ranged from £ 22 to 25 billion. Also, law and order and housing heritage and environment ranged from £ 15 to 17 billion. £ 13 billion of the total was spent on industry, agriculture and employment while only £ 9 billion was spent on transport and it was the smallest category. £ 23 billion of the total was spent on other expenditure.
This chart shows us that the social security and health and personal social services accounted for about half of the total UK budget.
